General Math Studies classes are offered for credit/no credit only (or "RP in the case of 90A-90/99A). GMS units count as study load ("institutional" units), but not as units towards graduation (baccalaureate units).
Please note: GMS is a cooperative program with San Diego City College, and our sections are currently taught by City College instructors (all held on the SDSU campus, and all earn SDSU "institutional" units).

General Math Studies 90A—designated GMS 90 as of Fall'05 (3 units)
GMS 90/90A provides the student with instruction in pre-algebra and beginning algebra (a class in elementary algebra); it is the first of a two-track developmental math program for students needing to clear the ELM. A credit is earned if a student accumulates at least 650 points out of 1000 possible points--400 points for the department's standardized final, 250 points for each of two departmental midterms, and 100 points for quizzes and other class participation.

Our former GMS 90B class, covering prealgebra, beginning algebra, plane geometry, and topics from intermediate algebra, was designed to satisfy SDSU's Transfer Math Assessment Exam requirement. In fact, that exam was the final exam for the class.
However, given the SDSU Faculty Senate's vote in Fall 2001 to eliminate the Transfer Math Assessment requirement, it is unlikely that this class will be offered again (and if it were to be offered, the grading criteria would have to be altered).

General Math Studies 91 (3 units)
GMS 91 is Intermediate Algebra, the class set as meeting the ELM requirement. Students receiving a credit are then ready to move into their entry level GE math classes. In fall, 2001, a new grading policy was implemented. A credit is earned if a student accumulates at least 650 points out of 1000 possible points--400 points for the department's standardized final, 250 points for each of two departmental midterms, and 100 points for quizzes and other class participation.
This class directly satisfies the ELM and the Part IA requirements.

Special sections of GMS 91 (GMS 91-RP)—Students who earn an RP grade in GMS 90 enroll in a special section of GMS 91 the next semester; they are not permitted to enroll in a regular section. These students are given extra support through smaller class size, in-class tutoring, and small group workshops—an add-on one-unit workshop--GMS 98B. Students attend these mandatory workshops (5 students or less) in the lab one hour each week with their appointed in-class tutor to reinforce the material being discussed in class.

*General Math Studies 99A/B/C, (4 units)—not currently offered
GMS 99 classes are four-unit versions of GMS 90A/90, 90B, and 91, respectively. This program was created to provide extra assistance to specially designated or at-risk students. These classes offer the assistance described above in a four-unit package—not as a separate three-unit class with a one-unit workshop add-on.

General Math Studies 98A/B (1 unit/1 unit)
†GMS 98A is a one-unit mini-class in geometry. It is an adjunct unit to GMS 90/90A, providing a brief review of plane geometry; topics include parallelism and perpendicularity, right triangles, Pythagorean theorem, special right triangles, circles, perimeters, areas, surface areas, volumes.
£ GMS 98B is a one-unit lab/workshop connected to specially designated 91 classes (see description ablove). It provides semester-long support to students in the form of mandatory weekly small group (five students or less) workshops conducted by the in-class tutor of the special section of GMS 91.

A complete description of each class may be obtained from the SDSU Catalog. Availability of classes may be obtained from the current SDSU Class Schedule.

Additional special sections of the above classes have included Math for Real Life, Math for Sciences, and DSS sections, though these are not currently offered. Any questions about these classes should be directed to Pat Morgan or Nghiep Quan.

* The 99 series classes are special Integrated Curriculum Classes open only to qualified freshmen. They include smaller class size, additional tutoring, and carry an additional unit.

† The Geometry Workshop supplements the 90A-90 / 99A class.

£ This class is an adjunct to certain GMS sections and provides additional support and practice. You will be informed if this pertains to you.
