Welcome
to the General Math Studies Program! We hope this will
be a successful semester for you. We are here to help you satisfy
at
least one of the following
requirements:
- Entry Level Mathematics (ELM)
- *Math Placement Exam, Part C
(Math Competency Test/Transfer Math Assessment exam)
*This exam
is no longer a university requirement; go to Advising if you
have questions.
- SDSU Math Placement Exam, Part IA (Intermediate
Algebra)--prerequisite for most entry level GE
math courses.
The following reviews some of our general policies and lists the
competencies satisfied by each of our courses.
Policies
- Our courses are offered for Credit/No Credit only (or “RP” for
our 90A students)
- Auditing and Late Withdrawal are against departmental
policy.
- Policies regarding final exams:
- Finals for all GMS sections
will be held on Saturday of finals week at 1:00pm.
- All GMS
final exams last 100 minutes.
- No calculators or extra scratch
paper allowed.
- Students arriving late may not be permitted
to take the exam.
Competencies
- 1. GMS 91--Credit is earned by cumulative performance on
two midterms (250 points each), a department final (400 points),
and class participation (attendance, participation, quizzes,
homework--100 points). 650 points or more earns a credit and
satisfies the ELM, the Placement, Part IA, and the Transfer Math
Assessment requirements. PLEASE NOTE: PASSING THE TEST OFFICE'S
MATH PLACEMENT, PART IA EXAM DOES NOT SATISFY THE ELM NOR DOES
IT EXEMPT A STUDENT FROM THE GMS 91 FINAL. PASSING THE ELM HAS
NO IMPACT ON GMS 91/99C COURSE GRADES.
- GMS 90--Credit is earned by cumulative performance on two
midterms (250 points each), a department final (400 points),
and class participation (attendance, participation, quizzes,
homework--100 points). Students earning 650 points or more receive
a credit, 500 - 649 --an "RP," and 499 or fewer points--a
no credit. No competencies are directly satisfied by this course,
but it does prepare students to challenge the ELM, and a grade
of RP or credit qualifies a student for GMS 91.
PLEASE NOTE: PASSING THE TEST OFFICE'S MATH PLACEMENT, PART IA EXAM DOES NOT
SATISFY THE ELM NOR DOES IT EXEMPT A STUDENT FROM THE GMS 90 FINAL. PASSING THE
ELM HAS NO IMPACT ON GMS 90 COURSE GRADES.
