1. Overview
The Tutorial Program
in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies (DRWS) offers graduate
and upper division students, across disciplines, opportunities to
wed theory to practice. Tutors are hired to work in developmental
writing courses designed to help students satisfy the Lower Division
Writing Competency requirement. The goal of the program is to help
a diverse population of students develop the writing skills they
need to succeed at the University and to provide tutors with valuable
experience in the teaching of writing.
Tutors are hired to work in the classroom with a faculty member
as mentor. Being a part of the class makes it possible for tutors
to learn more about the students and their writing problems, and
to hear how the instructor introduces and explains writing strategies
and reviews editing skills. Tutors play an important role in the
class by helping students as they work on assignments and by leading
discussion groups. Each week, in addition to their time in class,
tutors work several hours out of class either conferring with students
or correcting papers.
