Certificate in Professional Writing : Internship Guidelines

Preparation

List your placement opportunity as an available internship with the Advanced Certificate Program Director. The listing forms are available from the Advanced Certificate Program Director. You can also independently contract with an internship student.

Application and Contract

  • Review internship applications based on your own criteria and current needs.
  • Listing does not oblige you to accept all students or to always have an open position.
  • Request a resume, writing samples, recommendations, and/or an interview, if desired.
  • Negotiate the internship expectations with the student.
  • Specify objectives, responsibilities, schedule, and pay (if any).

On the job

  • Supervise the student's work.
  • Only writing-related work can count toward the internship.
  • Contact the Advanced Certificate Program Director if you have questions or problems about requirements.
  • Obtain progress/evaluation reports from the Advanced Certificate Program Director.
  • Evaluate the student after 75 and 150 hours of work.
  • Complete the interim evaluation form at least three weeks before the internship ends.
  • Discuss your comments with the student before signing the form.
  • The student should route the form to the Advanced Certificate Program Director.

Completion

Evaluate the student within one week of the end of the internship (minimum 150 hours). Complete the required final evaluation form, then mail or fax it to the Advanced Certificate Program Director. Indicate on the form whether you would like another student intern. You can maintain an open listing in the Advanced Certificate Program internship bulletin board. Your continued participation is extremely welcome.
