Jennifer Burke Reifman is an assistant professor in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies and future director of lower-division writing. She completed her Ph.D. in education with a focus on writing, rhetoric, and composition studies at the University of California, Davis, where her research centered on writing assessment and student agency. Her dissertation, titled "The Lies We Tell: Countering Normative Understandings of Agency in Self-Placement Practices," examines the implications of self-placement practices on student self-efficacy and agency within writing programs. Burke Reifman’s scholarship includes a range of peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, notably in “Assessing Writing, The Learning Assistance Review,“ and “College Composition and Communication.” Her work often explores the intersections of writing assessment, raciolinguistic ideologies, and feminist coalition-building in postsecondary writing programs, utilizing participant-centered methodologies to understand the experiences of undergraduate students. She has presented her research at national and international conferences, such as the Writing Research Across Borders Conference, Council for Writing Program Administrators Conference, and the American Educational Research Association Conference. With extensive teaching experience across various institutions, including community colleges and universities, Burke Reifman brings a rich background in writing program administration and assessment. Her commitment to inclusive, equity-centered assessment research is also reflected in her roles as a co-managing editor for Xchanges and her leadership in the Global Society of Online Literacy Education (GSOLE).
