Melissa Hurt is a native to San Diego County and has taught both in person and on-line at California State University San Marcos and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and thrilled to be a new addition to the RWS Department at SDSU. She earned both B.A. and M.A. degrees in Literature and Writing Studies from CSU San Marcos and minored in Film Studies. Melissa's training in film often manifests in her first-year writing classes as she employs a Cultural Studies lens to analyze and interpret texts across various mediums while identifying social and political contexts, and what these texts "say" about the overall human experience. As a first-generation college student, she strives to create a diverse and equitable classroom space that fosters learning for students from all backgrounds.

When Melissa is not teaching, she loves to travel and experience new people and cultures. Melissa has a beautiful daughter and the two of them often hike the trails at Safari Park, peruse local book stores, and attend open mics.
