Robert Pickford returns to the Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies after a 21 year hiatus. In the interim, he encountered the effective and affective domains of teaching, how students’ conception of the learning environment can actually fuel successful learning. “Students who feel welcome in a class, valued for their contributions to its success, and have some sense of achievement are very likely to feel motivated when engaging with their course work,” Pickford contends.
Pickford is an SDSU alum, having earned both B.A. and M.A. in English before migrating to Washington State University to investigate the relation of reading and writing that eventually led him to use discourse analysis as a tool for teaching writing. Besides the study of writing and cultural rhetoric, he pursued his other passion, jazz drumming at WSU. He performed professionally in Washington, Idaho, and Oregon on the weekends. He returned to San Diego where he taught at SDSU before accepting a tenured position at Mesa College. He is excited to teach once again at SDSU.
